Where your Instagram insights went
In short
Nothing was deleted from your account. Instagram’s account metrics are stored for up to 90 days, post insights are a lifetime running total with no history behind them, and a story is gone from the API 24 hours after it goes up. A history of any of it exists only if something recorded it day by day.
You open Insights to find the number you saw last month and it is not there. The window only goes back so far, the post you wanted has a total but no history, and the story you want to compare against is simply gone.
None of that is a bug, and none of it is reversible after the fact. Instagram serves three different kinds of insight with three different lifespans, and the shortest of them is one day.
If you are not sure what a figure on the Insights screen counts in the first place, the Instagram metrics glossary defines each one in a sentence.
Why did my Instagram insights disappear?
Because for most of what you are looking for, Instagram never kept it in the first place. It keeps a rolling window of daily account figures, it keeps a running total per post, and it keeps a story for as long as the story is live. Ask for anything outside those and the answer is not a smaller number — there is no row at all.
Meta’s own documentation states that user metrics data is stored for up to 90 days. That is the daily account series — reach, views, accounts engaged, profile link taps. Past the window there is nothing to ask for, and no setting, plan or tool restores it.
A metric can also vanish because Meta retired it. impressions was deprecated on both media and user insights in the changelog entry of 21 January 2025, applied in full by 21 April 2025, and replaced by views. An account that had been tracking impressions did not lose its history to a glitch; the metric stopped existing, and views counts something slightly different.
How far back do Instagram insights actually go?
| What | Shape | How long it is available |
|---|---|---|
| Account metrics | One value per day | Up to 90 days, per Meta’s documentation |
| Post and reel metrics | A lifetime-to-date total, not a series | Indefinitely — but only as today’s total |
| Story metrics | A lifetime total for one story | While the story is live: 24 hours |
The middle row is the one that surprises people. A post’s insights are not deleted — they are also never historical. Ask today and you get the total so far. Ask tomorrow and you get a slightly larger total. Nowhere in that exchange does Instagram tell you what the number was last Tuesday.
Why can’t I see what a post did in its first week?
Because a running total cannot be unwound. If a reel has 41,208 reach today, that figure contains its launch day, the week it sat quiet, and the day somebody with a large following shared it. Whether it earned its reach in eighteen hours or over five weeks is not in the number, and the API has no parameter that will separate them.
This is the single most expensive thing to learn late. Every question of the form “how fast did this travel” or “what changed after I switched formats” needs a series, and the series only exists if something wrote the total down each day while the post was young.
It is also why a post published an hour ago has no insights at all rather than zeroes. Instagram reports on a post within roughly 48 hours, and until it does, the honest reading of a missing row is “not reported yet” — not “reached nobody”. Anything that scores a fresh post as a nought will rank it below a post that genuinely failed.
What happens to story insights after 24 hours?
They stop being available to anybody, including you. Instagram serves the stories that are live right now; there is no endpoint for yesterday’s, and on the Instagram Login path there is no story-insights webhook to subscribe to either. Whatever was not read while the story was up is lost for everyone, permanently.
That makes stories the one surface where a daily job is not good enough. A story posted at nine in the morning and read at ten the next night is a story read after it stopped existing. Stories need their own schedule, which is exactly why Pullsy treats them as their own resource rather than as a filter over media.
Can I export Instagram insights?
Not from the app. There is no export button, and the numbers on screen are a view of the same rolling windows described above. The two honest routes are the API — GET /{ig-user-id}/insights for the daily account series, GET /{ig-media-id}/insights for a post — or a tool that calls it for you and keeps what comes back.
What actually preserves the history?
Recording it. That is the whole answer, and it is why sync tools exist for a platform that already shows you your own numbers. The difference between a connected account and an unconnected one is not access — you have access — it is that one of them has yesterday and the other does not.
- Connect early, not when you need the history. The 90-day account window is a hard floor on how much past can ever be recovered, and the day you connect is the first day you will ever be able to chart.
- Snapshot post totals daily. A row per post per day turns a running total into a curve. It is the only way to answer how quickly something travelled.
- Read stories within the day. Not the next morning. Twenty-four hours is the whole window, and it is not negotiable.
- Keep nulls as nulls. A post with no metrics row is a post Instagram has not reported on. Storing a zero there quietly poisons every median you compute afterwards.
- Write the metric names down once.
savedon a post issaveson an account, andimpressionsis gone entirely. A rename in the query layer is how one number ends up counted twice.
That is what the Instagram connector does on a schedule: the daily account series, a snapshot of every post and reel, and stories read while they are still live. And once the history exists, it can be graded — which is what the account grade is built from.
Questions people ask
Why did my Instagram insights disappear?
Most likely the window moved rather than anything being deleted. Meta documents that user metrics data is stored for up to 90 days, so daily account figures older than that stop being available. A metric can also vanish because Meta retired it, as impressions were in 2025.
How long does Instagram keep insights?
Meta’s documentation states user metrics are stored for up to 90 days. Post insights are not kept as history at all — they are a lifetime-to-date total that you can read at any time but never read backwards. Story insights last 24 hours.
Can I get Instagram insights from before I connected a tool?
Only what the platform still holds: up to 90 days of daily account metrics, and the current lifetime total for each post. No tool can recover a past series, because Instagram itself does not have one to serve.
Why do my newest posts show no insights?
Instagram reports on a post within roughly 48 hours. Before that there is no metrics row, which is different from a row of zeroes — the post has not been measured yet, so it should be left out of averages rather than scored as nothing.
Can I export Instagram insights to Excel?
Not from the app, which has no export. The data can be pulled through the Instagram insights API and written anywhere you like, which is what a connector does for you — including keeping the daily snapshots the app never shows.
Do story insights come back if I add the story to a highlight?
No. Highlights preserve the story for viewers, not its insights for you. The insights endpoint serves stories while they are live, and after 24 hours there is nothing to query for that story.
