What does back mean on an Instagram story?
In short
Back is the number of times viewers tapped to return to the previous frame of your story — they wanted to see it again.
Rewatching is deliberate. A tap back is rare, and it is the closest thing a story has to a save: the frame was worth a second look — a detail to read, a price to check, a joke that landed.
It can be missing rather than zero. Instagram leaves out a navigation action nobody took instead of reporting it as nought, so a story with no taps back simply has no back figure in the API.
Is higher better?
Higher is better
A frame people go back to is a frame worth repeating in your next story.

Questions people ask
Is back good on Instagram story insights?
Yes. Back counts taps to rewatch the previous frame, which viewers only do on purpose. It is the most positive of the four navigation actions.
