What does navigation mean on Instagram stories?

In short

Navigation is the total number of times viewers moved through your story — tapping forward, swiping to the next account, tapping back, or exiting — added into one number.

Navigation is the most misread number in story insights, because it adds together four behaviours that mean very different things. Two of them are good news.

Forward is a tap to your next frame — ordinary, most stories are watched this way. Next story is a swipe to another account's story. Back is a tap to rewatch the previous frame, the best signal on the list. Exited means the viewer closed stories altogether.

One real frame the connector read had 90 navigation actions: 46 taps forward, 11 swipes to the next story and 33 exits. Read as one number it looks like ninety people escaping; read properly, half of it is the story working.

Is higher better?

It depends

The total means nothing on its own. Split it: forwards are neutral, backs are good, exits are the one to bring down.

Where to find it

While the story is live, open it and swipe up to see its activity. Afterwards it is in your Professional dashboard under the content you shared.

Questions people ask

Is high navigation on an Instagram story bad?

Not by itself. Navigation includes taps forward to your next frame, which is how stories are normally watched. Only exits mean the viewer stopped watching stories on that frame.
