What is engagement rate on Instagram?

In short

Engagement rate is a post's interactions divided by an audience size — and it should be reach, the people who actually saw the post, not your follower count.

Instagram does not report an engagement rate; everybody who quotes one computed it, and the number depends entirely on what they divided by. Engagement rate by reach is interactions ÷ reach: of the people shown the post, the share who did something. By followers is interactions ÷ followers, which is what outside tools quote because it is all they can see.

The two differ for reasons that have nothing to do with the post. The same post — 570 interactions, reach 8,400, 12,400 followers — is 6.8% by reach and 4.6% by followers. An account whose posts reach half its followers reports half the rate by followers.

The comparison worth making is against your own recent posts, not a platform-wide figure. Read the median rather than the average, split reels from feed posts, and say how many posts the rate came from.

Is higher better?

Higher is better

But only against the same denominator. A rate by reach and a rate by followers are not comparable, and a benchmark that does not say which it used is unreadable.

Where to find it

Instagram does not show a rate. Take interactions and reach from a post's View insights and divide one by the other.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Divide a post's interactions — likes, comments, saves and shares — by its reach and multiply by 100. Dividing by followers instead gives the figure outside tools quote, which is lower whenever the post reached fewer people than you have followers.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

One that is higher than your own recent posts in the same format, measured against the same denominator. A single platform-wide benchmark hides format, audience activity and reach beyond followers — which vary more between accounts than the rate does.
