What is reach on Instagram?
In short
Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your post, reel or story at least once — people, not views, so one person watching three times counts once.
Reach is the closest thing Instagram gives you to *the audience* of a post. Because it counts people, it is the right denominator for almost every rate worth quoting — engagement rate, save rate, share rate — since it is the set of people who actually had the chance to act.
It has one rule that catches people out: reach cannot be added up. Two posts that each reached 8,000 accounts did not reach 16,000; they reached everyone who saw either, counted once. The same is true across days, so a monthly reach has to be asked for over the month, not totalled from thirty daily ones.
Reach is private. It is served only to the account holder, which is why a tool that grades you from your public profile has to estimate it — and why a media kit built from your own insights can show it.
Is higher better?
Higher is better
More people saw it. But compare against your own recent posts in the same format — reels and feed posts are reached differently.
Where to find it
Open the post and tap View insights under it. You need a professional (Business or Creator) account. Account-wide reach is under Professional dashboard → Account insights.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between reach and views on Instagram?
Reach counts unique accounts; views counts every time the content was shown or played. One person watching a reel three times adds one to reach and three to views, so views is always at least as large as reach.
Can I add up reach across posts?
No. Reach counts people, and the same person often sees several of your posts. Adding reach across posts or days counts them more than once. A reach figure for a period has to come from Instagram for that period.
Related metrics
- ViewsViews count the number of times your post, reel or story was played or displayed, including repeat views by the same person.
- Engagement rateEngagement rate is a post's interactions divided by an audience size — and it should be reach, the people who actually saw the post, not your follower count.
- ImpressionsImpressions — the number of times a post was shown — is no longer reported: Meta deprecated it in April 2025 and replaced it with views.
