What are views on Instagram?

In short

Views count the number of times your post, reel or story was played or displayed, including repeat views by the same person.

Views is Instagram's single count of exposure across every format. It replaced two older metrics — impressions for posts and plays for reels — when Meta retired both from the API in April 2025, so older reports and newer ones are not measuring quite the same thing.

Because it counts repeats, views is always at least as large as reach. The gap between them is informative: on one live story the connector read, 99 accounts produced 137 views, meaning some people came back to it.

Views is the number to watch for how much a post was *shown*. Reach is the number to watch for how many *people* it got to, and the one to divide by when you want a rate.

Is higher better?

Higher is better

More exposure. Read it next to reach: views far above reach means rewatching, which on a reel is a good sign.

Where to find it

Open the post and tap View insights under it. You need a professional (Business or Creator) account. Account-wide views are under Professional dashboard → Account insights.

Questions people ask

Do Instagram views count the same person twice?

Yes. Views counts every play or display, so a person who watches a reel three times adds three views. Reach is the metric that counts each person once.
