What is skip rate on Instagram reels?

In short

Skip rate is the percentage of viewers who moved on from your reel early rather than staying with it — lower means your opening held people.

Skip rate is about the first moments of a reel, not the whole of it. A high skip rate says the hook did not land; it does not say the rest of the reel was bad, because most of the people who skipped never saw the rest.

It is a percentage, not a count: 53.2 means 53.2% of viewers. Instagram introduced it in December 2025 without publishing a definition of how early "early" is, so anyone quoting an exact number of seconds is quoting an inference.

Read it relatively. Compare a reel's skip rate against your own recent reels, and look at what the low-skip ones did in their first frame — that is where the answer is.

Is higher better?

Lower is better

A low skip rate means the opening held viewers. Compare against your own reels; there is no published benchmark worth trusting yet.

Questions people ask

Is a high skip rate bad on Instagram?

It means most viewers left in the opening moments, so the hook is worth changing. Judge it against your own recent reels rather than a platform figure — Meta has published no definition or benchmark for it.

Why is skip rate missing for my feed posts?

Instagram serves skip rate for reels only. Feed posts and stories do not have it.
