What are follows in Instagram insights?
In short
Follows is the number of accounts that started following you from a particular post or story — the post-level answer to "what is growing my account?"
Your follower count tells you the account grew. Follows tells you which piece of content did it. It is served for feed posts and stories; like profile visits, reels do not report it through the insights API.
Follows is usually small next to reach, and that is normal — it is the last step of a funnel that starts with being shown the post. The useful comparison is between your own posts: which formats and topics turn viewers into followers.
Is higher better?
Higher is better
As a share of reach, against your own posts. It is the strongest single signal that a post earned you an audience.

Questions people ask
Can I see which post got me the most followers?
For feed posts and stories, yes — each one reports follows, the accounts that followed you from it. Reels do not report follows through Instagram's insights API.

- Profile visitsProfile visits is the number of times people went to your profile from a post or story — the step between liking something and following you.
- ReachReach is the number of unique accounts that saw your post, reel or story at least once — people, not views, so one person watching three times counts once.
- Engagement rateEngagement rate is a post's interactions divided by an audience size — and it should be reach, the people who actually saw the post, not your follower count.
